Breast Implant Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Many women would like to have a larger chest size in order to feel more attractive in tops or by the pool and choose to have a breast augmentation to boost their confidence. However, breast enhancement is a big decision. Below are some commonly asked questions about having the procedure:

How do I know what size I will be the happiest with?

At Faires Plastic Surgery we use sizing implants prior to surgery to estimate the size that is appropriate for your body profile and the geometry of the implants.

What are the safety risks involved? Can they leak or irritate the surrounding breast tissue?

Saline implants will deflate if they lose the integrity of the shell. Since they are filled with saline which is a natural substance, it will be absorbed harmlessly into the tissue. Gel implants can lose the integrity of the shell and may have some leakage into surrounding tissue. The newer gels are cohesive and less likely to migrate from the scar capsule around the implant.

Will breast augmentation surgery limit or alter my physical activity in the long-term?

After the initial postoperative limitations, there are no physical limitations. Some activities may cause pressure or discomfort to the implants, but do not harm them.

Am I a candidate for a procedure that will minimize my scarring?

The position of the scars is a personal matter. There are a few limitations to the position of the scar, but each individual must be checked before surgery is scheduled.

Will the new Implants look natural? Will people be able to tell I've had work done?

My goal is to provide the most natural enhancement possible. The changes are a function of relative change in size, type of implant and personal clothing.

I've heard silicone is going to be offered again. What are the pros and cons of that versus saline?

Silicone gel implants remain the most popular implants outside the US. Generally, they feel more natural and are less likely to ripple. When they lose shell integrity, it is more difficult to tell and replacement of implants is more difficult than with saline.

What is the best incision point, under the armpit, under the breast or through the nipple?

The position of the scars is a personal matter. One limitation to a through the nipple scar is the size of the areola.

What time of year is good for a breast augmentation?

Anytime you can tolerate 4 weeks of inactivity.

Is rippling always noticeable? Does it relate to over or under filling the implant?

Rippling is a common effect after saline and occasionally silicone implants. It is a function of internal and external pressure on the implant and the relative thickness of the tissue cover over the implant. Rippling is minimized when the implant is filled to the manufacturers specifications.
