Male Breast Reduction Plastic Surgery in Fort Worth
Gynecomastia Surgery Overview
Although rarely discussed, potentially half of the male population has excess fatty tissue in their chest area, known as gynecomastia. Men who feel particularly self-conscious about this condition often turn to plastic surgery as a way to remedy the situation. In fact, nearly 20,000 men a year have breast reduction surgery. The result is a flatter, more masculine chest.
A breast reduction involves removing fat and tissue from the breast and reshaping them to be sized proportionately to the rest of the body.
Your Personal Consultation in Our Fort Worth Plastic Surgery Office
You will discuss with Dr. Faires how to treat your medical condition while at the same time shaping the breasts to look the way you would like for them to. At this time, Dr. Faires will also inform you of risks and the probable outcome of surgery.
Information About Male Breast Reduction Plastic Surgery
This three hour surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia. Incisions are made at the base of each breast and fat, tissue, and excess skin are removed. Skin is pulled up over the areola and a new incision is made. The areola is then pulled through the new skin like a button through a buttonhole. Then, plastic surgeon Dr. Faires reshapes the breast and sutures the skin back together. Sometimes, liposuction can be used to remove excess fat, causing only minimal scarring.
Limitations to the Gynecomastia Procedure
Dr. Faires may recommend that you change your diet and exercise more if you have gynecomastia. This is because obesity, alcohol, marijuana smoking, and steroids can actually cause the condition. In these situations, the remedy is adjusting behavior to stabilize the condition. Although quite rare, those who have gynecomastia surgery run the risk of getting an infection or excessive bleeding. Also, those who have gynecomastia may have scars from surgery or pigmentation disparities.
Although incredibly rare, complications from the liposuction (if needed) can include infection, blood clot formation or fat clot formation (which can circulate to the lungs causing death), fluid loss, damage to skin, and burning.
Recovery from Male Breast Reduction Cosmetic Surgery
For the first week, Dr. Faires will have you wear gauze, a compression garment around your chest, and medication will keep the pain from breast reduction surgery to a minimum.
A week or two following surgery, your stitches will be removed. For a month, you must avoid all contact sports where any pressure may be applied to your chest as well as any job situation where you could hurt your chest. Keep the scars out of the sun for six months, or the pigmentation could permanently turn dark.
Male Breast Reduction Results
Although it may take some time to recover after breast reduction surgery, in a few months, the scars will fade. Most people that have breast reduction are quite happy with the results, as they no longer feel discomfort associated with their chest.
Your chest will appear to be much more chiseled and masculine.
