Otoplasty generally lasts two to three hours and is done on an outpatient basis. Local anesthesia combined with a sedative is most commonly used to numb the pain, but in some cases, especially in surgeries involving small children, a general anesthesia is administered.
The ear surgery procedure involves an incision behind the ear. After the ear is sculpted and necessary skin and cartilage are removed, the skin is sutured back together. The scar left from the incision tends to be small and eventually heals.
