Facial Enhancement Cosmetic Surgery Overview

As we age, our bones start to shrink in size, but our skin - increasingly obdurate year after year – stays the same size. To make matters worse, years of UV-ray exposure, stress, and pollutants cause bothersome wrinkles to etch themselves into our skin. After 50 or 60 years of growth, your skin can make you look older than you feel. To counteract the harsh aging process, people increasingly turn to facial plastic surgery as a way to regain a more youthful appearance.

A facelift is a surgical technique that removes excess fat from the face, tightens the muscles, and re-drapes the skin. Often, people will combine the facelift with another procedure such as eyelid surgery or nose reconstruction. You can discuss with plastic surgeon Dr. Faires your long-term goals and choose the best options for you.

We often have patients ask about the threadlift procedure because they have heard that it is a good alternative to a traditional facelift. Despite popular belief, however, the threadlift is not considered safe or effective at this time, due to the fact that the threads used for the procedure have had problems, resulting in product recalls. Dr. Faires does not perform the threadlift procedure, preferring the classic facelift for its lon-lasting and natural-looking results, as well as other facial plastic surgery procedures such as eyelid lift, neck lift, or brow lift.

The best candidates for a facelift have some sagging skin on the face and neck region. Usually, they have good bone structure and some elasticity in the skin. Most people get facelifts in their forties or fifties; however, some people have the facelift procedure done in their seventies and eighties, as well.

Information About Face Lift Plastic Surgery

The facelift procedure itself will take several hours, and in some cases, the surgery will be separated into two different sessions. The patient is put under general anesthesia, and incisions are made in front of the ear, around, and behind the ear. The skin is separated from the muscle. Dr. Faires will trim away excess fat and skin and pull the muscles tighter. Stitches help pull everything back together. A tube is sometimes placed behind the ear to collect blood, and bandages may be wrapped around the head to lessen swelling or bruising.

Recovery from Facelift Cosmetic Surgery

Initially, Dr. Faires will probably ask you to keep your head elevated for a couple of days to prevent blood from collecting. After a few days following facelift plastic surgery, the stitches and draining tube will be removed.

The face may be puffy for a couple of weeks and you may feel some numbness for a couple of weeks or months following a facelift. The scars will become less noticeable after a few weeks and at that point, most patients are very happy with the results of facelift cosmetic surgery.

Facelift Results

While you will, of course, continue to age over the years, the results of a facelift will keep you looking younger than if you never had the facelift. Usually, after five or ten years, patients are ready to have another face lift.
