Non-Surgical Laser Rejuvenation for the Skin

Laser resurfacing is a relatively new plastic surgery procedure where a laser is used to vaporize damaged skin revealing the new healthy layers beneath.

Laser resurfacing has a multitude of uses, including reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles - especially around the mouth and eyes - to even out skin tone and to reduce acne scars. Recent developments in laser skin resurfacing allow for greater precision and levels of results and safety never before attainable. Non-ablative laser treatments stimulate the formation of new collagen cells without removing skin cells.

Laser resurfacing is an alternative to procedures such as dermabrasion, peels and liposuction, and treats blemishes, uneven skin tone and wrinkles with a higher intensity than peels. It essentially tightens loose skin and diminishes creases.

Although there is some minor discomfort during surgery, there is virtually no post-operative pain, less touching the skin that has been treated. People of all ages can benefit from this procedure. It is optimal for those who want to treat a localized area of skin, for instance, lines around the mouth or a facial scar.

Information About Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Laser resurfacing is usually performed in Dr. Faires's office or in an outpatient surgery center. Depending on the extent of the procedure, it can last anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour to complete laser resurfacing treatment. After the treatment is completed, Dr. Faires will apply ointments or creams to moisturize and help the skin heal. Before you start treatments, Dr. Faires may recommend you prepare your skin with medicated facial products.

Limitations to Laser Skin Treatments

Laser resurfacing has a dramatic effect on the face; however, it generally won't erase lines completely. And, of course, natural movements such as smiling or raising the forehead will cause lines to recur.

Remember to find a surgeon qualified in laser resurfacing. Although side effects are rare, an inexperienced surgeon may apply the laser for too long a period and cause burning of the skin. It can also lighten or darken skin pigmentation.

Recovery from Laser Skin Treatment

After surgery, your skin may be bandaged for ten days. When the bandages come off, an ointment will be applied to the skin. There may be rough, dry skin on your face that should not be removed lest scarring result. After about two weeks, makeup can be applied and most redness is gone, however evidence of laser treatments can last up to six months.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation Results

After a few months, you should see the full results of treatment. They results are lasting, however future exposure to the sun and natural facial expressions can cause the wrinkles to recur. Dr. Faires will help you by giving you ways to prevent recurrence.
