Professional Skin Care in Fort Worth
Non-Surgical Skin Care Overview
Not only is your skin the most visible part of you, it is the largest living organ of your body. It also endures the most stress day-to-day. So why wouldn’t you give it the best treatment you can?
Your skin serves many purposes for your overall health, including protection of internal organs, elimination of waste, sensory perception, absorption of essential ingredients and regulation of body temperature.
Factors such as UV rays, pollution, smoking, poor nutrition and overall lifestyle contribute to the diminishing quality of skin over time. The accumulation of oxygen-free radicals (oxyradicals) from these elements causes skin to deteriorate and lose its youthfulness over time. Oxyradicals are estimated to attack us about 10,000 times per day.
There are many ways you can adjust your lifestyle to accommodate the health of your skin:
- Drink plenty of water
- Wear an everyday protective sunscreen
- Use a preventive skin care program
- Eat a balanced diet
- Get UV-ray blocking windows for your car
- Use a bronzer instead of tanning
- Avoid sun exposure during the peak hours for harmful UV-rays - 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Examine your skin from head to toe at least once every few months
- Wear sunglasses that block UV-rays
- Don't smoke
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep each night
- Avoid pollution when possible
Avoiding Sun Damage
Sun damage exponentially increases the skin’s natural aging process. UV rays penetrate all the way through skin’s outer layer into deeper layers that strengthen skin and make it durable.
The three types of rays given off by the sun are UVC, UVB and UVA rays. UVA rays are believed to be the most penetrating rays, causing the most visible damage to skin and accelerating the skin’s aging process. UVA rays are 100 times more powerful than UVB rays and are present year round. UVB rays are burning rays. UVC rays are blocked by the ozone layer.
Products with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) only protect against UVB rays. SPF is measured at 2.0 mg per cubic centimeter and does not measure UVA ray protection. Full sun protection is impossible. Even SPF60 only protects against 98.3 percent of UVB rays and only when applied correctly. Factors other than SPF to consider when buying sunblock are ingredient concentration, broad-spectrum coverage and product formulation.
Just one bad sunburn during childhood doubles the risk of getting melanoma later in life. Those who burn easily, especially fair-skinned and light-haired people, are most susceptible to get skin cancer. However, anyone can develop skin cancer.
Facts About Sun Exposure
- UV rays can penetrate many types of clothing, car windows and home windows.
- Sun exposure can damage your eyes and contribute to cataracts and macular degeneration.
- When you are on snow or ice, the number of UV rays your face and eyes are exposed to is almost doubled.
- Sun exposure is the main cause of skin cancer.
- A change in a mole, a sore that doesn’t heal, a spot that continues to itch and a skin growth that gradually increases in size are all possible indicators of skin cancer.
- People who always burn, have fair skin, freckles, red or blonde hair and light eyes are particularly at risk for skin cancer.
- Sunscreens can prevent cancer.
- Damage that later results in skin cancer is accumulated in childhood.
- Melanoma risk is hereditary.
- Effects of the sun will make you look older than you really are.
- Skin cancer is treated in many ways, including excisions, radiation therapy and topical chemotherapy.
Preventing Skin Cancer
Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and can be life-threatening. Tens of thousands of new cases of melanoma are reported annually to the American Skin Cancer Society. When cells in the body are malignant, it creates an environment ideal for melanoma. These cells form tumors that are often dark-colored but can also be skin-colored or pinkish.
The four categories of melanomas are defined by the depth of their location in the skin. The closer the melanoma is to the surface of the skin, the more likely it is to be treatable. That’s why early detection is crucial.
Prevention is key in avoiding the health risks and damage that skin cancer creates. The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests the following facts and ways to protect yourself and your family from the sun:
- Don’t sunbathe.
- Avoid unnecessary sun exposure during the peak hours for harmful UV rays— 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- When outdoors, use sunscreens rated at least SPF15. Apply it liberally, uniformly and frequently.
- Wear protective clothing when exposed to sunlight.
- Avoid tanning beds.
- Teach your children good sun protection habits.
- Examine your skin from head to toe at least once every few months.
- Wear sunglasses that protect against UV rays

Your skin is the most visible part of you, the first thing people see. It also endures the most day-to-day stress, as oxyradicals constantly attack skin. Think of the skin as your body's protective shield. Why wouldn't you give it the best care possible?
Sun damage exponentially speeds up the skin's natural aging process. UV-rays penetrate all the way through skin's outer layer into deeper layers that strengthen skin and make it durable. This weakness can be minimized through a skin care regimen and regular treatments.
Antioxidants are used daily by our bodies to fight against free radicals. Other than obtaining these antioxidants through our diet, topically applying vitamins to our skin can add to skin's antioxidant supply as well. Give the gift of bright, healthy skin this Christmas.
