Cosmetic Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?

Reconstructive surgery restores the body to its original or normal form and cosmetic surgery improves on normal form.

How do I know if my surgeon is qualified?

Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery ensures that the surgeon has a solid background in a general surgical specialty and rigorous training in all aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Does plastic surgery leave scars?

All surgeries leave scars, but plastic surgeons are able to hide the scars so that they will not be noticeable.

Will it hurt?

All surgical procedures cause some discomfort, and pain medications will be given to relieve pain.

How long will I be off work?

It depends. For some surgeries, you will need only a few days to recover while with others it can take up to six weeks before you will be ready to go back to work. In the case of BOTOX® Cosmetic , you can come in on your lunch hour, have the procedure and go straight back to work once the procedure is over.

Who takes care of me?

Most of the procedures are done on an outpatient basis, and patients usually need help for the next day or two.

When can I exercise again?

Most patients need to rest for two weeks and can gradually return to full activity within four to six weeks after surgery.

Does insurance cover plastic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is excluded from most health insurance policies, but some surgeries that involve reconstructive surgery are covered by insurance. Check with your health care provider to see if you are covered.

Am I vain for wanting cosmetic surgery?
